Sustainability Report Analysis: Selfridges

PIioneering Women Series: our series amplifying the work of women that work in sustainable luxury, we take a look at the Selfridges Sustainability Report.

Change is the constant like in our previous analysis from last week- linked in comments.
Selfridges have a new CEO, André Maeder, also CEO of Selfridges Group took over from November 2024.
Succeeded Andrew Keith who was CEO from 2021.
Sustainability activity will come under Reselfridges: sustainable reinvention of the business.

The report is in its 3rd year and has been renamed from Project Earth to the Selfridges Sustainability Report to make the purpose clear according to Leonie Foster the retailer’s Chief Operating Officer.

Project Earth was Selfridges series of ambitious long-term sustainability commitments  set to radically change the business launched in 2020. Since then the retailer went on to launch their RESELFRIDGES platform for preloved handbags.

In 2022 Selfridges made news by setting an ambitious goal for 45% of transactions coming from circular products or services by 2030. This is an ambition they are sticking to.

Selfridges have managed to achieve 50% female representation at Director Level and above and 15% ethnic group representation at leadership level.
- 16% of own-bought sales came from Project Earth edit for over 18,000 products.
- 78% waste recycling  across all stores.
Worn Again: dedicated a season to circularity: swap shops, resell and repair
- Circular Model Sales: Rental, Resale, Refill & Repair generated £12.7m
- Transparency: sharing the lessons learnt from the previous year.
