Fashion Brand Transparency

✺ The Fashion Transparency Index by Fashion Revolution assesses the transparency of 250 of the world's largest fashion brands, several of which are luxury brands. They discovered 89% do not disclose how many clothes they make annually.

╰┈➤ 80 to 150 billion clothes are manufactured each year (Vogue). The exact number is unknown. The impact of the number being unknown is that change can't be measured without a baseline and there is no accountability for the overproduction.

╰┈➤ Significant efficiency opportunities lie in this space for sustainability teams to support value creation in sales forecasting and inventory practices. Some solutions that get proposed for dealing with excess inventory are:
- Outlets: this still has the downside of fuelling consumerism
- AI: is energy intensive but yet to see studies exploring if its use offsets the problems it solves
- Recycling: is multi-handling and processing of products and ignores that textile farming and energy used could have been used for other purposes.
